BINSAR

At a distance of 385 km from Delhi, Binsar was once a capital of the Chand Raj Kings. It is a destination providing the visitors with solitude, natural beauty and one of the India’s highest wildlife sanctuaries.

At an altitude of 2410 meters, Zero Point is the highest point of this destination that provides a 180 degree view of the Himalayas at a stone’s throw distance. The most renowned peaks that are visible from the destination are Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, Kedarnath etc.

The Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary covers an area of 45.59 sq. km. and witnessing Ghoral, Leopard, bear, and barking deer at a high altitude as in Binsar in an eye-pleasing view. Within the Binsar Sanctuary is Khali Estate, a former British estate that became Mahatma Gandhi’s ashram from 1929 to 1935.

Religiously speaking, Binsar has three well-known temples in a radius of around 75 km, namely Jageshwar, Bageshwar, and Chitaidevi. Jageshwar is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is regarded as one of the most sacred ‘tirthas’ in the Kumaon region, with a linga considered to represent one of the 12 jyotirlingas around the country.

Besides the wildlife Binsar also offers marvelous rock paintings.

By Air :The nearest airport is Pantnagar at 150 kms.
By Rail :The nearest railhead is Haldwani (120 kms.). Distance from the nearest major town Almora is 26 kms. Nainital is 90 kms. away.
By Road :Binsar is well connected through motorable roads to all prominent towns- Almora (34 kms.), Nainital (120 kms.) & Delhi 418 kms.
 
   

Among the numerous temples, Jageshwar also has Mritunjaya temple which is said to be the oldest dating back to the 8th century.
