Located in the Chail town of Himachal Pradesh, the Chail Sanctuary spreads out to an area of 110 sq. km. and is located in the foothills of the mighty Himalayas. It was declared as a protected area in 1976.
Along with the animal and bird population of the Chail Sanctuary it is also famous for its Chir pheasant breeding farm. The forests are mainly dense covers of Oak and pine and major grassland covers as well. Rhododendron forms pure stands in some places and some are sown with Cedar and Blue Pine. The forest is mostly confined to the northern part of the sanctuary. |

The Chail sanctuary mainly comprises of mammals including rhesus macaque, leopard, Indian muntjac, and goral chested porcupine. Other species are Himalayan black bear, wild boar, sambhar, and black-naped hare. The Chir breeding and rehabilitation center has helped increase in the number of Chir birds in the forest. |
